Overweight Dogs and Humans Have Similar Personality Traits
Overweight dogs share similar personality traits with overweight humans, finds a new study. Researchers of the study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, say their findings suggest dogs may provide a model to study human obesity.
According to the study, dogs are obese for three main reasons; genetic predisposition, reproductive management, for example the neutering of female dogs, and not enough exercise, or unhealthy food.
The study’s results show normal and overweight dogs behave differently in situations that involve food and interaction with humans as motivation. Overweight dogs tried to maximize their intake of higher quality food or they hesitated when they were given food in an unfamiliar location.
Researchers say contrary to what some people may think, obese dogs wanted the best food, but not surprisingly, with the least amount of effort. Similarly, overweight humans are attracted to energy-dense foods and see food as a reward.
