WHO Classifies 'Gaming Disorder' as Mental Health Condition

The World Health Organization has identified ‘Gaming disorder’ as a mental health condition in its 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases.

According to WHO, a gaming disorder “is characterized by a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour...which may be online...or offline.’ A person with a gaming disorder increasingly prioritizes gaming over other life interests and daily activities. Having the disorder may result in, “significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning.”

CNN reports one of WHO’s leaders said WHO followed ‘the trends, the developments, which have taken place in populations and in the professional field.’
