Chemicals in Dog Food Could be Making Your Dog Sick
Dogs who eat commercial dog food are being exposed to parabens, preservatives found in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, finds a new study. According to the American Chemical Society, parabens interfere with dogs’ hormones and affect their developmental, reproductive and neurological systems.
The research, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, says exposure to chemicals are a concern for pets, but there is little known about the sources of exposure.
Scientists collected pet food and urine samples and found concentrations of parabens in both. Dry food contained higher concentrations of parabens than wet food and cat food had higher levels than dog food.
Researchers also found other sources of paraben exposure for dogs other than diet, but for cats, the majority of exposure was related to diet.
