Supreme Court Lets States Legalize Sports Gambling

The Supreme Court paved the way for states to legalize sports betting on Monday, striking down a 1992 law, which prohibited most states, from wagering on a single game.

The decision was made based on a lawsuit filed by the state of New Jersey. New Jersey passed laws to legalize sports gambling in 2012 and 2014, but they were shot down by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. So, New Jersey sued and it ended up in the Supreme Court.

Gov. Chris Christie tweeted a statement that reads in part, “A great day for the rights of states and their people to make their own decisions. New Jersey citizens wanted sports gambling and the federal Gov't had no right to tell them no...”
