Dogs and Humans Are More Similar Than You May Have Thought
You may feel close to your dog, but did you know that we have similar microbiomes to our pets? A new study published in the journal Microbiome found dog microbiome is close to human microbiome and both are affected by diet.
Researchers found dog microbiome is closer to human microbiome than those of pigs and mice, which are the animals normally used for human nutrition research. For example, scientists found overweight and obese dogs experienced larger compositional shifts than lean dogs after eating a high-protein diet.
The findings show dogs may be more predictive of human microbiome results that the more widely used animal subjects.
