Viagra, Steroids Found in Dietary Supplements

A new study finds nearly 800 dietary supplements sold over the counter from 2007 through 2016 were found to contain unapproved drugs including ingredients found in Viagra and steroids.

The report published in the Jama Network Open showed the FDA warned about the unapproved ingredients, but many of the supplements were still sold.

The study says more than 50 percent of the U.S. population takes dietary supplements, making the findings a public health concern. The report adds the supplements have the potential to “cause severe adverse health effects owing to accidental misuse, overuse, or interaction with other medications, underlying health conditions, or other drugs within the same dietary supplement.”
