ABC, Meat Producer Settle 'Pink Slime' Defamation Suit
ABC News, and South Dakota based meat producer, Beef Products Inc., settled a $1.9 billion dollar lawsuit over the news network’s reports on a finely textured beef product known as “pink slime.” The Sioux City Journal reports the terms of the agreement are confidential, but BPI officials and lawyers were celebrating.
According to ABC News, BPI sued ABC in 2012, saying the network misled consumers into believing “pink slime” is unsafe, not real beef and isn’t nutritious. BPI said in statement that lean, finely textured beef is in fact beef, safe and nutritious. BPI said their sales of the product declined from about 5 million pounds per week to less than 2 million pounds per week.
