Syrian Government Using Crematorium to Hide Mass Killings
The U.S. State Department said the Syrian government has built a crematorium near the Saydnaya Military Prison to hide proof of mass killings.
Reuters reports acting assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs, Stuart Jones, said President Bashar Assad’s government authorized the mass hangings of thousands of prisoners during Syria’s six year civil war and the crematorium could be where their bodies were disposed. He released aerial images of the crematorium to reporters.
Amnesty International released a report in February saying up to 13 thousand people were secretly hanged at the prison.
