Rolling Stone Reporter Found Liable In UVA Defamation Trial

A jury found Rolling Stone magazine liable for defamation with actual malice over a discredited story about a gang rape at a University of Virginia fraternity house. The magazine's publisher and writer Sabrina Rubin Erdely, were also found liable.

The $7.5 million lawsuit brought by Nicole Eramo, a University of Virginia administrator, claimed the Rolling Stone article titled "A Rape on Campus" portrayed her as insensitive to the rape victim's gang rape allegations.

CNBC reports the magazine's attorneys said the reporter and her editors made mistakes, but there was no evidence they acted with actual malice.
