LBN’s Ryan Gaumont reports that Bill Cosby ended 2015 facing criminal charges arising out of one of the many allegations that have been made against him. Cosby has been charged with aggravated indecent assault in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania by Kevin Steele, the district attorney-elect. The criminal conduct that is charged in the case arises from allegations by Andrea Constand. The criminal activity with which Cosby is charged occurred in 2004.
In the past several years, over 40 women have accused Cosby of sexual misconduct. (See LBN’s December 15 report on Cosby’s defamation lawsuit against seven of the women who have accused him.) The Montgomery County case is the first criminal case filed against Cosby in connection with the allegations of sexual misconduct, primarily because most of the alleged incidents occurred so long ago that they are barred by statutes of limitation. The Montgomery County case was filed one day before the statute of limitations would have barred the case.
Cosby’s lawyers have said they will fight the case. “Make no mistake, we intend to mount a vigorous defense against this unjustified charge and we expect that Mr. Cosby will be exonerated by a court of law.” Kevin Steele said he decided to proceed with the case after seeing a deposition in a civil suit filed by Ms. Costand. Steele’s filling of the case has been called politically motivated because Steele’s campaign accused the man he defeated for election of failing to bring the charges earlier.
