Corporate America's Impact on Arizona Bill 1062 With Gay Rights, With Brad Bannon, Washington, D.C.

Nationally, a critical mass has been reached, in that gay marriage is becoming widely-accepted, according to Brad Bannon, a democratic political consultant in Washington, D.C., with Bannon Communications Research.  Bannon also feels that the attitude of corporate America has changed and we should be saying "can't fight corporate America," because they're using its economic clout to further gay rights and gay marriage.  The inclusion of a gay couple ice skating with the daughter during a Coca-Cola commercial that aired during the Super Bowl, is an example Bannon cites that corporate America has turned the corner of gay rights.

Once corporate America puts its economic clout behind it, there's no stopping it, says Bannon.  In Arizona, where Senate Bill 1062 stands in the balance, which says that businesses can't be sued for denying service to gay customers, Apple is threatening to cancel their plans to build a plant there unless Governor Jan Brewer vetoes the bill.  The NFL had also sent a strong warning about cancelling their plans to have the next Super Bowl there.  Even Republican Newt Gingrich has asked Brewer to veto the bill and to Bannon, that is critical mass in this country moving towards widespread acceptance of gay marriage.  "Once you reach that mass, you really can't stop it," he says, adding that's exactly why Brewer feels mounting pressure to veto the bill.

What we're seeing here, says Bannon, is a "last stand by dead enders," and for those who oppose gay marriage, the more it's becoming accepted in this country, the louder those dead enders will get, he says, because they're on the wrong side of the issue.

"Once corporate America gets on the band wagon, it's all over," Bannon says, adding that we can't fight corporate America with so much money at stake.  With prominent Republicans even seeing the trend, you can't fight it anymore.  "Corporate America likes social equality because it doesn't cost them any money," Bannon says.
